About Thomas Bryla
Thomas Bryla is a Danish composer, arranger, orchestrator, and conductor whose work spans film, television, video games, and concert music. After completing his film composition studies at the Danish National Academy of Music in 2012, he joined Jóhann Jóhannsson's music team, orchestrating a range of films, albums, and concerts until Jóhannsson's untimely passing.
Initially emerging as part of a wave of Nordic minimalism, Bryla has since explored the full range of orchestral expression. His approach is deeply informed by a study of the great masters, blending historical techniques with modern sensibilities to create fresh, dynamic scores. Known for his speed, clarity of notation, and meticulous attention to harmony and balance, his scores are crafted to be performed flawlessly without additional explanation.
His film credits include Arrival (2016), where his orchestrations contributed to the film’s distinctive minimalist aesthetic; M3GAN (2023), featuring experimental symphonic arrangements that heightened the film’s horror elements; and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), which blends a modern soundtrack with driving rhythms and lush string writing. He has also worked on The Meg 2: The Trench, The Union, and Danish productions such as Børnene fra Sølvgade, Riget Exodus, and Sommeren '92. In the gaming industry, he contributed orchestration to Dune Awakening (2025), bringing a cinematic scope to the game’s musical landscape.
Bryla is a longtime collaborator with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, particularly on their film music concerts. His arrangements have been performed worldwide, especially in Europe, by ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, WDR, and NDR Symphony Orchestra.
He currently splits his time between composing, orchestrating, and conducting, continuously bridging the gap between tradition and innovation in contemporary orchestral music.
